Meet the team – Louise Manfredi, CEO, Leep Utilities

Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to this role?
I’ve spent most of my career in the utilities sector. I started out on a graduate programme as an energy cost consultant, at the time, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do, but I really enjoyed the work and ended up staying in that role for seven years. I was then approached by the Peel Group to help establish a new utilities subsidiary. I spent 18 years at Peel Utilities, ultimately becoming Managing Director. When Ancala acquired a 50% stake in the business, we became Leep Utilities, and I stepped into the role of CEO. Over the last eight years, the business has transformed. We’ve seen massive growth, particularly in our multi-utility offering. The acquisition of SSE Water in 2019 was a pivotal moment, propelling us into the NAV (New Appointment and Variation) space. We’ve gone from a team of just 10 to more than 140 people, with offices in Manchester and Reading.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing the incredible transformation of the business has been hugely rewarding. We’ve gone from being a small and relatively unknown player to being trusted with critical infrastructure at some of the UK’s most iconic developments, like keeping the lights on at Battersea Power Station. I also really enjoy the pace and variety of the role. We’re always evolving, always looking for ways to improve how we work with and for our customers. We’ve never stood still, and that drive for progress is something I find really energising.

What challenges are you helping your customers tackle this year?
Fuel poverty is a major concern right now. Many people are genuinely struggling to pay their bills, particularly in the water sector, and we’re doing a lot to support those most in need. That includes initiatives like introducing social tariffs and implementing protections for vulnerable customers. On the developer side, the upcoming Future Homes Standard will mean no new connections to the gas network after 2025. That represents a significant shift in planning and infrastructure strategy, and we’re working closely with our customers to help them identify and implement the right alternative heat solutions.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from a colleague?
Be authentic. Don’t try to be something you’re not. Whether it’s in how you work with customers or how you engage with your team, honesty and openness go a long way. And of course, kindness matters too, especially in leadership.

If you could have dinner with any historical or industry leader, who would it be?
If I’m being completely honest, and following my own advice to be authentic, I’d much rather spend that time having dinner with my family and friends. Life is busy, and time outside of work is precious. The people closest to me matter more than celebrities or public figures, and that time with them is what I value most.
