Why are microgrids gaining momentum?

A combination of market forces is accelerating the adoption of microgrids across the UK.

The retirement of older gas-powered combined heat and power (CHP) systems, the rapid electrification of heating through heat pumps, and ongoing grid connection constraints are all making traditional approaches more challenging. At the same time, developers are under increasing pressure to deliver sustainable, commercially viable projects without lengthy delays waiting for network capacity.

Microgrids offer a practical solution.

By combining technologies such as on-site solar generation, battery energy storage and intelligent energy management, developers can reduce reliance on the national grid, lower infrastructure costs and improve project viability.

For many schemes, particularly those incorporating EV charging or significant electrical demand, a well-designed microgrid can reduce the size of the grid connection required while helping to accelerate delivery.
