The challenge
Farburn Terrace marked a significant milestone as Leep’s first 33kV connected battery energy storage system (BESS), delivered in partnership with ICP (Independent Connections Provider) Green Frog Connect on behalf of Centrica.
The project’s primary objective was to reinforce the local network for SSE Networks while aligning with net zero requirements. This meant increasing capacity without relying on traditional fossil fuel generation such as gas or coal.
In addition, the system needed to operate within a Bi-Lateral Electrical Generation Agreement (BEGA) framework, requiring a complex discharge profile across multiple daily peaks, including morning and early evening demand, alongside a later evening surge driven by public sector shift changes, providing a reliable 2.5 discharge cycles per day.
Compounding this technical complexity were external pressures, including evolving political leadership and legislative changes throughout the project lifecycle, creating a moving target for compliance and approvals.

The solution
Leep delivered a flexible, future-ready battery energy storage solution capable of meeting both network reinforcement needs and dynamic demand profiles.
By integrating advanced system components and ensuring compatibility with evolving regulatory requirements, the project provided a renewable-led alternative to traditional reinforcement methods.
Close collaboration with Green Frog Connect ensured the delivery of a technically robust solution, incorporating key elements to enable effective monitoring, control, and performance optimisation.

- Engineering problem-solving: Working closely with SSEN it was highlighted that there was the need for upgraded 33kV circuit breakers at the Grid Substation, uncovering wider network anomalies. We spearheaded the specification, design, and implementation to ensure system integrity.
- Partnership strength: Our collaboration with Green Frog Connect combined expertise and industry credibility, enabling us to address complex technical challenges and align stakeholders around clear priorities.
Results
Despite significant technical, regulatory, and operational challenges, the Farburn Terrace project was successfully delivered to energisation on time and on budget.
The project has:
- Strengthened the local electricity network using a renewable-led solution
- Enabled flexible, demand-responsive energy discharge aligned with real-world usage patterns
- Delivered critical infrastructure improvements beyond the immediate site
- Built valuable capability and experience within Leep for future BESS projects
